About UsThe Commuter Challenge is an annual one-week event coinciding with National Environment Week and Clean Air Day that takes place in urban centers. The primary objective is to motivate Canadians to leave their cars at home when hey head for work. Motivational efforts focus on personal, social and environmental health benefits, usually with an emphasis on improved air quality, reduced greenhouse gas emissions. There is also considerable focus on the impressive economic benefits of healthier commuting for both individuals and corporations. The Commuter Challenge concept began in 1991 and the official National competition was launched in 1999 through the Climate Change Action Fund with the introduction of a web based data collection system that streamlined all of the existing commuter programs across the country. Since then, interest in the program has been overwhelming! In 2008 the program engaged over 4,000 workplaces, 35,000 participants, reduced 484,00kg GHG, reduced 3,000,000 km of car travel, and saved 115,800 litres of gas. Despite cutbacks in funding over the past few years, interest in the program has not diminished. 2010 Organizing Team RoleThe National Commuter Challenge team aim to provide:A national data collection tool Reporting on a timely basis Technical and advisory support to community coordinators; Update and maintenance of the Commuter Challenge Web site; Promotional material to community coordinators; Financial support to community coordinators whenever possible; National news releases; National public service announcements; Templates for local news releases, work plans, etc.; Recruitment of new communities and organizations to take the Challenge.
